CLEANINGS

At El Dorado Hills Dental Wellness, we emphasize the importance of regular dental cleanings as a fundamental part of maintaining your oral health. Our skilled dental hygienists are dedicated to providing thorough cleanings that not only leave your teeth feeling fresh and clean but also contribute to the prevention of dental issues.

Professional dental cleanings, also known as prophylaxis, are typically recommended every six months to help maintain the health of your teeth and gums. These cleanings go beyond what can be achieved through regular brushing and flossing, effectively removing plaque, tartar, and stains that can accumulate over time.

Here’s what you can expect during your dental cleaning appointment:

  1. Thorough Examination: Before the cleaning, our dental hygienist will perform a comprehensive examination of your teeth and gums. This evaluation allows us to identify any areas of concern and develop a tailored cleaning plan.

  2. Plaque and Tartar Removal: Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth. If not removed, it can harden into tartar, which is more difficult to remove and can contribute to gum disease. Our hygienist will use specialized tools to gently remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of your teeth, including those hard-to-reach areas.

  3. Teeth Polishing: After plaque and tartar removal, your teeth will be polished using a dental polishing paste. This process helps to remove surface stains and leaves your teeth feeling smooth and refreshed.

  4. Expert Guidance on Oral Hygiene: Our dental hygienist will provide valuable guidance on proper brushing and flossing techniques, as well as recommendations for oral care products that can help you maintain optimal oral health at home.

  5. Examination of Gum Health: In addition to cleaning your teeth, we will evaluate the health of your gums. This includes measuring the depth of the spaces between your teeth and gums (periodontal pockets) to assess for signs of gum disease.

Regular dental cleanings offer numerous benefits:

  1. Preventing Tooth Decay: Plaque buildup can lead to tooth decay. By removing plaque and tartar during cleanings, we help prevent cavities and maintain the health of your teeth.

  2. Maintaining Healthy Gums: Cleanings play a vital role in preventing gum disease, which can lead to gum inflammation, bleeding, and even tooth loss. Regular cleanings help keep your gums healthy and reduce the risk of gum-related issues.

  3. Enhancing Oral Health: Good oral health is linked to overall well-being. Regular cleanings contribute to a healthier mouth, reducing the risk of systemic health problems associated with poor oral hygiene.

  4. Freshening Your Breath: Plaque buildup and gum disease can contribute to bad breath. Cleanings eliminate the bacteria that cause odors, leaving you with fresher breath.

  5. Detecting Dental Issues Early: During cleanings, our dental team can identify potential dental issues such as cavities, gum disease, oral cancer, and other concerns. Early detection allows for prompt treatment and better outcomes.

CLEANINGS AND ORAL HYGIENE

Properly brushing and flossing every day, twice a day is necessary for a healthy smile, but it is not a substitute for professional cleanings. Only professional cleanings by your dentist or dental hygienist can remove plaque buildup that leads to gum disease. The most effective way to ensure the health of your teeth and gums is to come in for your routine cleanings.

MAKING A HEALTHY SMILE

A cleaning is a simple treatment that preserves your oral health and prevents potential damage from bacteria. The American Dental Association recommends coming in for a dental cleaning every 6 months. However, patients who are more prone to gingivitis are recommended to come in more often, every three to four months, to prevent infections. This is also recommended for patients with dental implants. A cleaning is not just for the purpose of removing build up and plaque. During your appointment your dentist will also do a full oral examination to check for signs of cavities and more serious dental issues, even oral cancers.

BRUSHING AND CLEANING EFFECTIVELY

Patients should brush their teeth at minimum twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste. It is also recommended that you floss at least once every day. Your toothbrush should have soft bristles and be replaced every three to four months, or more frequently if your toothbrush is visibly damaged or the bristles are fraying. The American Dental Association states that both manual and electric toothbrushes can be effective.
There are a number of methods for effective brushing. Our dental hygienist can show you these techniques at your next appointment.
