When is a Dental Filling Needed?

Dental fillings are typically recommended in the following situations:

    1. Tooth Decay: Dental fillings are used to treat cavities caused by tooth decay. After removing the decayed portion of the tooth, a filling is placed to restore the tooth’s structure and prevent further decay.

    2. Tooth Fractures: Teeth can fracture due to trauma or excessive force. Fillings are used to repair and strengthen the damaged tooth, restoring its functionality and protecting it from further damage.

    3. Worn Down Teeth: Over time, teeth may become worn down due to grinding (bruxism) or other factors. Dental fillings can build up the tooth’s structure and restore its natural shape, allowing for improved function and aesthetics.

At El Dorado Hills Dental Wellness, we prioritize your oral health and strive to provide you with the highest quality dental fillings. Our goal is to restore the strength, function, and beauty of your teeth while ensuring your comfort throughout the treatment process.

If you have a cavity or damaged tooth, schedule a consultation with us today. Our experienced team will assess your dental needs, recommend the most appropriate filling material, and provide you with a customized treatment plan to restore your oral health and maintain your radiant smile.

The Dental Filling Process

Receiving a dental filling at El Dorado Hills Dental Wellness involves the following steps:

    1. Evaluation and Treatment Planning: Our dentist will carefully examine your teeth, assess the extent of the damage, and determine the appropriate treatment plan. We will discuss the filling material options with you, taking into consideration factors such as the location of the tooth, aesthetic concerns, and budget.

    2. Anesthesia and Comfort: Before the filling procedure begins, we will ensure your comfort by administering local anesthesia to numb the treatment area. If desired or necessary, we also offer sedation dentistry options to help you relax throughout the procedure.

    3. Removal of Decay: The decayed or damaged portion of the tooth is gently removed using specialized dental instruments. The affected area is thoroughly cleaned and prepared for the filling.

    4. Filling Placement: We use high-quality filling materials, such as composite resin or porcelain, to restore the tooth. These materials can be color-matched to your natural teeth, providing a seamless and natural-looking restoration. The filling is carefully placed and shaped to achieve the desired appearance and functionality.

    5. Bonding and Finishing: Once the filling material is in place, it is bonded to the tooth using advanced techniques and a specialized light. This bonding process ensures a secure and durable restoration. Our team will then check your bite and make any necessary adjustments to ensure proper alignment and comfort.

    6. Aftercare and Oral Hygiene: Following the procedure, we will provide you with instructions on how to care for your filling and maintain optimal oral hygiene. It is important to brush and floss regularly, attend regular dental check-ups, and avoid habits that can damage the filling, such as biting on hard objects or grinding your teeth.

Cavities are a break in the enamel of the tooth caused by decay. If you have a cavity that is big enough to cause concern, you may need a filling. Fillings can protect the tooth from further damage and stop sensitivity that can be caused by cavities. We use durable fillings that match the color of your teeth making them appear nearly invisible. We don’t recommend using mercury amalgam fillings and do not use them in our practice.

Aside from being extremely noticeable and unsightly, amalgam fillings can cause more harm to your health. They often contain mercury or other heavy metals that can affect your health. Another issue with these fillings is that they do not bend when pressure is applied to the tooth, and this causes more cracks in the teeth. Therefore, we recommend if you have amalgam filling to replace them.
